Methods of Removing Car Window Tint

Car window tint deteriorates with age and eventually has to be removed or replaced. This task must be done carefully to avoid scratching or damaging your glass window.

Most film is made up of two layers of tinted polyester. When you try to peel off the film off the glass, the top layer will usually pull right off leaving the second layer behind. This second layer will not peel off, it will just flake and tear in your glass. You'll probably end up with a sticky mess on the glass that will take several hours to remove. In this case, you need to be extra cautious when it comes to car window tint removal and replacement.

Removing window tint is not that difficult. Here are two popular methods of removing car window tint:

Ammonia Method. This method requires a sunny day and dilute ammonia. Before spraying the ammonia, make sure to protect other things in your car. It is also important to wear mask. Ammonia fumes might be harmful. First, spray the film with ammonia. While the ammonia is still wet, wrap the window film with another trash bag or plastic wrap. Park the car with the appropriate window facing the sun for an hour to soften the tint's adhesive. You can use alternative way to fasten the process by using hair dryer. When left under the sun, the plastic wrap will absorb heat, helping the film peel off in one piece. Then, peel the film with your fingernails or razor blade to lift the film in the corner of the window. Just be careful not cut the defroster lines. Use a razor blade to scrape off any tint that did not peel, then wipe it with paper towel before it dries. Finally, clean the window thoroughly with glass cleaner.

Steaming Method. In this method, you need a steamer to make your job even quicker. Steam the corner of the tint first until you can pick it off by your fingernail. Do the peel and steam process at the same time. This will loosen the the glue with the steam. Slowly peel the tint off. If you peel the tint too hard, you might leave the sticky adhesive behind. After you peel all of it, you can now wipe the window a towel.
